Google Cleaned House, Both Phone Assistants Went Gemini, and Reddit Lost Its Seat at the Table

SEO updates September 2026

Week of September 1–7, 2026

“Why did my rankings drop for no reason last week?”

There was a reason. You just did not get an email about it.

Here is everything that mattered in SEO, AEO, GEO, and social this week, and what it means if you run a small business in the US.

Search & AI Visibility

Google had the roughest week of anyone, and it spread the damage everywhere at once. New ranking-volatility data confirms the August spam update was a real disruption, not routine noise. The top 10 URLs were far more likely to fall out of the top 100 entirely during the rollout, and the hit landed across fashion & beauty, e-commerce, business, healthcare, and real estate. No industry got an exemption this time (Search Engine Land, citing SE Ranking data). If your site leans on AI-generated or thin content, this was the update that found it.

For the first time, Google will actually tell you whether AI Overviews and AI Mode send you traffic. Search Console’s new AI Performance Reports break results down by impressions, country, device, and date, live worldwide now (Search Engine Journal / Google Search Central Blog). This becomes the new default tab on every SEO check you run on your own site. No more guessing off a third-party tool’s estimate.

Google didn’t stop at the reporting layer. It swapped the engine underneath it too. AI Mode now runs on Gemini 3.8 Flash, described by Google VP of Product Robby Stein as the company’s strongest “workhorse” model yet for reasoning and multi-step queries, live now for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers (Search Engine Land). A smarter model changes which pages get cited. The page winning visibility today is not guaranteed to win it next month.

Both major phone assistants are becoming the same assistant. Starting September 4, Google began retiring Google Assistant on Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, and Android Auto projected from your phone, with Gemini taking over, and the rollout runs for a few weeks to reach everyone (Search Engine Land). Cars with Google built directly in keep the old Assistant for now, so this is specifically about phones and the devices paired to them. Worth knowing: Apple’s Siri is going through its own Gemini-powered overhaul this same month with iOS 27. If your business depends at all on how someone asks their phone about you, Gemini is about to be answering on both sides of the aisle.

Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fell 86.4% in four days. Promptwatch tracked the drop from 3.83% to 0.52% between August 14 and 17, and a smaller decline had already started August 8, around the same time ChatGPT Search changed how it fans out a query across sources. Reddit’s presence in Google’s own AI products slipped far more gradually over the same stretch (Search Engine Land, citing Promptwatch). If your AEO plan leans heavily on Reddit threads getting cited, this is the week that should make you nervous about putting all of it in one basket.

Anthropic is rolling out AI content watermarking across every Claude product, using an approach based on Google DeepMind’s SynthID-Text, in response to the EU AI Act. It doesn’t change the visible words, but dedicated tools can detect it even after the text gets copied elsewhere, and enough manual editing can defeat it (Search Engine Journal / Anthropic). Clients are starting to ask, “Is this AI-written?” Watermarking is becoming the industry’s answer, and it helps to know its limits before a client brings it up first.

Social & Platforms

X pulled the plug on how creators get paid and replaced it with a stricter door. Revenue sharing officially ends September 7, with final payouts around September 11. The replacement, Original Content Rewards, opens applications September 8 and requires 500 or more verified followers, 500,000 or more Home Timeline impressions in 90 days, and an active X Premium subscription (X / Social Media Today). Eligibility resets for everyone. Check it before the payout you were counting on doesn’t show up.

Facebook quietly became Google’s second favorite forum. Ahrefs data shows public Facebook Group posts now appear in 38.3% of Google’s Discussions and Forums results, overtaking Quora for the top spot in January and holding it since, with Reddit still well out front at 87.8% of US results (Search Engine Journal, Ahrefs analysis). Every Facebook link in that module traces back to a public group. For any small business running a community Facebook group, that group is a real AEO channel now, not just a place to answer customer questions.

X’s own paperwork says it’s losing Europe. X’s required Digital Services Act filing shows its EU user base down roughly 15% since October 2025, while TikTok added 9 million EU users in the first half of 2026 alone (189 million total) and Instagram grew to 297 million EU users, with Threads at 41 million (Social Media Today, citing official DSA disclosures). This is platform-reported, not a third-party guess. If you run paid social in Europe, that’s a real reason to shift budget, not a hunch.

Tools, Ads & AI Products

Google launched Google Pics, a Canva competitor built entirely around prompts instead of design tools, powered by Nano Banana, rolling out to Workspace, AI Pro, and AI Ultra users over the coming weeks (TechCrunch). Worth testing before you pay for another design subscription, especially for quick Google Business Profile posts.

This is the single biggest e-commerce shift of the week, and it has nothing to do with Google. As of September 4, ChatGPT shopping placements require a connected product feed. No feed means no visibility in ChatGPT shopping results, regardless of ad spend. OpenAI also expanded ChatGPT Ads into more than 30 new markets across Europe, India, the Middle East, and North Africa, alongside a new chat-based Ads Manager Plugin and upgraded audience and conversion tools (Common Thread Collective). Same pattern as when Google moved Shopping to feed-only results. The businesses that connected their feed early captured outsized visibility, and the ones that waited did not.

Meta AI can now read your ad account and hand you a report. Businesses can connect Meta ad accounts and Google Workspace data to get AI-generated performance analysis, creative and audience recommendations, and automatic reports as documents, slides, or spreadsheets (Search Engine Land). Worth testing for reporting efficiency. Just remember that free advice from the platform selling you the ads is still advice from the platform selling you the ads, so check any recommendation against your actual profitability numbers before you act on it.

None of this is exotic. Google changed what it rewards, then handed you a way to measure it. Two different phone assistants are about to run on the same underlying model. One citation source lost most of its visibility overnight, and nobody official has explained why yet.
